Thyme

Who would ever believe that this herb that makes all my Nigerian and Carribean dishes come to life could be such an incredible home remedy for dandruff?

Thyme is so amazing, I can’t even begin to list its benefits.

It increases blood flow to the scalp and brings life our hair follicles which ends up making our hair grow. If you have a look at some antidandruff shampoos, you would see occasionally see thyme listed as an ingredient.

How I use it

Thyme infused oil: Leave some fresh or dried thyme to infuse in some olive oil for 3-7 days.

Massage this oil into your scalp as part of your regular hair care routine.

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV, as it’s more popularly called, is literally the home remedy to everything from weight loss to acne-free skin.

For natural hair, it’s benefits are endless. But personally, I love how it gives me shinier hair. That glow when my hair hits the light is unmistakable when I have done an ACV rinse.

It gets a lot of praise for balancing the ph level of the hair and also for adjusting hair porosity.

How I use it

Hair rinse: I mix three parts water with one part apple cider vinegar and use it as a hair rinse after washing out my deep conditioner

Onion

If you can bear the smell of onion juice, this tried and tested method can work wonders for your hair.

Onion juice is rich in sulphur that boosts the production of collagen in your tissues, and then promotes hair growth. The yellow onion has a higher sulphur content, just in case you need to decide which one to use.

What’s also great about onion juice is that it has antibacterial and antifungal properties which will prevent hair loss. Some people have recorded hair growth after only 2 weeks of use.

How I use it

Onion pre poo: Chop onion into small pieces and squeeze out its juice. Apply it evenly all over your scalp, massage it in and cover with a plastic wrap. Leave on for 20 minutes and wash it off with your regular shampoo.

Rice

Rice water recently became a trending thing and it’s not dying down anytime soon.

Honestly, I was sceptical about rice as a home remedy until I saw this video break down the science behind it. Rice water contains inositol which is actually scientifically proven to improve the elasticity of our hair.

How I use it

Rice water rinse: Soak rice in water for 30 mins to an hour. Wash hair as normal and rinse hair with the rice water. Let it sit for 30 min under a shower cap. Rinse out the rice water, deep condition and style as usual.

Coconut milk

If you run out of deep conditioner. Coconut milk or coconut cream (not creamed coconut) is the next best thing to grab.

You know why it’s so good? Because it brings moisture to your hair. They type of moisture that stays.

I have never seen anything more moisturising than coconut milk. When I use it, there is a huge difference in my twists. They are so much more luscious, I wonder why I don’t use coconut milk more often.

mix with honey oils etc

Coconut milk has amazing properties especially for dry brittle hair

How I use it

Coconut deep conditioner: I mix coconut cream (it’s thicker) with some avocado oil and use as a deep conditioning treatment. I sit under a hooded dryer or my steam cap for 30 minutes and rinse.

I hope you found this shortlist helpful and that you grab them and grow your hair with them.

Natural hair doesn’t have to be expensive you know? Okay, go to your kitchen now!

Till next time
