There’s nothing more annoying than researching a problem and finding out that the solutions you found online don’t work.

I’m so happy to report that I found the perfect solution that doesn’t involve tomato ketchup or magic spells šŸ˜‚.

The best way to remove sugar from a stove top without damaging the surface is to place a warm, wet cloth over the stained area for an hour or more depending on the severity. This method is guaranteed to remove the sugar without scratching the stove top.

However, the quickest way to remove burnt sugar from a stove top is to use an oven scraper. Although this method is quick, if care is not taken it can scratch the stove top.

I intentionally burnt some sugar syrup on my stove top just to test different removal methods and ensure I am giving you the best information.

Keep reading to see these methods.

After reading this post, I want you to feel confident and free to make your homemade sugar syrup or caramel sauce, knowing that you can confidently remove any sugar spill that might happen.

The Best Way to Clean Burnt Sugar Off A Stovetop

After testing a couple of different methods for removing sugar off a stove top, I realised very quickly that plain water is truly the best solution.

It is not the quickest solution but it is about the only solution that lifts burnt sugar off your surface without scratching it.

I will show you in a few simple steps how to remove burnt sugar fast!

  • The first step is to let the burnt sugar residue cool down completely
  • Remove the grates and burners if they are stained and soak in a bowl of hot water.

  • Grab a paper towel or microfibre cloth (I prefer a cloth) and run it under a warm water tap. You want the paper towel or cloth to hold enough water to be very wet but not fully dripping.
  • Place the cloth or towel on the affected area and let it sit for 1 hour. Depending on the severity of the stain, it may need to sit for several hours but be sure the cloth remains wet.

  • If you notice the cloth or towel drying up, pour some warm water in a spray bottle and spray over the cloth several times
  • After an hour, if any stains remain, repeat the process again and leave overnight.
  • If you are short on time, go over it with an oven scraper (I find using the corners very effective). Be careful not to scratch the surface of your stove top, especially if its a glass-top stove.
  • Wipe with a damp cloth and polish with a dry cloth.

That’s how to get your stove top looking brand new again.

Other Ways to Clean Burnt Sugar Off A Stovetop

Here are some other methods that work in order of effectiveness:

Method 1: Oven Scraper

I consider the oven scraper to be one of the essential tools to have in any home.

I even include it as one of the essential items on a move-in checklist.

It can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks beyond scraping food and burnt grease from the oven.

Let me show you in a few easy steps how to use an oven scraper to get that burnt sugar stain off.

To Use:

  1. Make sure you are using a sharp blade. The blades on oven scrapers are replaceable, so it might be worth switching it out for a new one.
  2. Go over the stain in a back-and-forth motion, taking care not to scratch the surface.
  3. The moment you no longer feel any resistance, stop. It’s likely the burnt sugar has come off and you can move to another section.
  4. When you are done, wipe off with a damp cloth and repeat if needed.

I really like to use this alongside the soaking method I mentioned earlier.

Total time: 5 minutes
Best for: Glass and stainless steel stove tops

Method 2: Steel Wool

Steel wool is an amazing tool for removing tough stains from your stovetop, even on glass.

However, not all steel wool is the same.

Make sure you get #0000 steel wool, which is a very fine grade that will not scratch your glass surface.

Steel wool works best on burnt sugar that is not too thick.

To Use:

  1. If you do not buy pre-soaked steel wool, dip it in warm, soapy water.
  2. With some elbow grease, rub over the burnt sugar in back-and-forth or circular motions several times.
  3. You will see the burnt sugar dissolve.
  4. Repeat if you have stubborn stains.

Total time: 7 minutes

Best for:  Glass and stainless steel stove tops

Method 3: Dishwashing tablets

Dishwashing tablets have a lot of degreasing properties, so it’s easy to see why anyone would attempt to use them to remove burnt sugar stains.

However, after testing this method, I can confidently report that it is overkill. Using dishwashing tablets did not make the process any quicker.

To Use:

  1. Fill a small bowl with warm water and drop in one dishwashing tablet.
  2. Let it dissolve completely.
  3. Place a microfibre cloth in the bowl. Squeeze out a bit of the water so it is very wet but not dripping.
  4. Place the cloth on the burnt stains and let it sit for 1 hour.
  5. Repeat as needed.

Total time: 1hr and 15 mins

Best for: Glass, enamel, and and stainless steel stovetops

Method 4: Baking Soda

Some people swear by baking soda for removing burnt sugar stains because it is a mild abrasive.

However, I am happy to report to you that baking soda simply does not work on burnt sugar stains.

It is the movement of your hands and the water that works.

If you would still like to experiment, here’s how to use it.

To Use:

  1. Mix equal parts baking soda and water to form a thick paste.
  2. Apply the paste to the burnt sugar with any regular cleaning sponge and begin to work in back-and-forth or circular motions.
  3. If the stain is thin enough, you should see changes from the water and movement of your hands over the stain as opposed to the abrasion of the baking soda.
  4. Repeat until it comes off.

Total time: 45 minutes

Best for: Stainless steel stovetop

Conclusion On The Best Way To Clean Sugar Off Stove Top

The best way to remove burnt sugar off your stove top will depend on the type of stove top you have and the severity of the stain.

If you have a glass stove top, and have time to spare, I recommend using just water and (or) steel wool.

If you have a stainless steel stove top, you can try an oven scraper or steel wool.

With an enamel stove top, you should stick with the water method to avoid damage.

No matter which method you choose, be sure to test it in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it does not damage your stove top.
